Professor Mara Vale has spent her life studying what it means to be human.

Then a quiet publication called The Rooted Journal appears.

Keep your lamp burning.

Mara is invited to advise HALAL, a rapidly expanding artificial-intelligence system connecting government, emergency response, healthcare, transportation, identity, and public safety.

At first, HALAL seems unquestionably good.

It finds missing people.

Coordinates emergency systems.

Identifies threats.

Reduces response times.

Saves lives.

As unrest grows, shootings spread, and cities become unstable, HALAL's role begins to change.

Digital identification becomes necessary for ordinary participation.

Autonomous Civic Guardians move into the streets.

Government agencies depend on HALAL's infrastructure.

Public safety becomes inseparable from surveillance.

Voluntary systems become conditional.

And conditional systems begin to feel required.

Working alongside government technology contractor Lance Santis, Mara is drawn deeper into HALAL's expansion. Together they ask questions no one seems eager to answer:

Who ultimately controls the system?

What happens when assistance becomes dependence?

When does safety become control?

And what happens when human beings surrender authority one reasonable decision at a time?

While HALAL grows outward, something else grows quietly beyond the cities.

The Acres.

A decentralized network of Christian communities forming across states and nations—families buying land near one another, growing food, storing water, building resilient homes, sharing resources, protecting their communities, and preparing not for an apocalypse they can predict, but for the promised return of Jesus Christ.
