Walking as Prayer: Movement for Body and Soul
By Heather Eden, LPC, CHC · October 2026
Jesus walked. To the next town, up the mountain, along the shore — the Gospels are full of roads. There is something about walking pace that suits prayer: slow enough to notice, steady enough to settle.
Movement as care, not punishment
So much of what the world says about exercise is framed as a battle against the body. But movement was never meant to be a punishment for what you ate. A walk is a way of caring for the body God fearfully and wonderfully made — circulation, strength, sunlight, breath.
Let the walk become a prayer
Leave the headphones behind sometimes. Notice the trees — planted where they are, doing their quiet work. Let your thoughts turn toward God without forcing them into sentences. Some prayers are simply walking together.
Twenty minutes, most days, at a pace that lets you breathe deeply. It is enough. It is more than enough.
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, This is the way; walk in it." — Isaiah 30:21
