The Gift of Rest in a Hurried World
By Heather Eden, LPC, CHC · October 2026
We live in a world that treats exhaustion as a badge of honor. The calendar is full, the phone is never quiet, and somewhere along the way we began to believe that rest must be earned — that it waits at the end of a finished list. But the list is never finished, is it?
Rest came first
In the very first pages of Scripture, God rested. Not because He was weary, but because rest is woven into the fabric of how things were made to be. The Sabbath was not an afterthought; it was the crown of creation. When we rest, we are not falling behind. We are living in rhythm with the One who made us.
Rest is also a quiet act of trust. To stop working is to say, with our bodies and our schedules, that the world does not hold itself together by our effort. He holds it. He holds us.
What rest is not
Rest is not laziness. It is not escape, and it is not numbness scrolling through a screen until the evening disappears. True rest restores. It returns you to your life with softer shoulders and a quieter mind.
Beginning a rhythm of rest
Start with one hour that belongs to no task. A slow walk. Tea on the porch. A psalm read aloud. Let it be small and let it be protected. Over time, that single hour will teach your whole week how to breathe.
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28
