A Prayer for Anxious Hearts

By Heather Eden, LPC, CHC · October 2026

If your heart races at three in the morning, you are in good company. David knew it. Elijah knew it. Even the strongest saints of Scripture had nights when fear spoke louder than faith. Anxiety is not a spiritual failure. It is part of being human in a heavy world — and it is something we can bring, honestly, to God.

Name it

The psalms teach us to begin with honesty. "Why are you cast down, O my soul?" David asks — not pretending, not performing. Write it down if that helps. Speak it aloud. Anxiety shrinks when it is named in the presence of God.

Answer it with Scripture

For every anxious thought, there is a word stronger than it. Keep a short list of verses where you can find them quickly — in your journal, on a card by the kettle, on the lock screen of your phone. When the fear rises, answer it out loud.

Care for the body that carries the worry

Anxiety lives in the body as much as the mind. Sleep, nourishment, magnesium, a slow walk, a warm drink — these are not separate from your spiritual life. God made you whole, and He cares for all of you.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." — Philippians 4:6
