An Evening Wind-Down for Deep, Restful Sleep

By Heather Eden, LPC, CHC · October 2026

We ask a great deal of our bodies when we expect them to go from full speed to deep sleep in a single moment. Sleep, like most good things, responds to invitation. An evening wind-down is exactly that: a series of small signals that tell your body the day is complete and it is safe to rest.

Lower the lights, lower the noise

An hour before bed, begin dimming. Lamps instead of overhead lights, screens set aside, the house growing quieter. Your body reads light as a language — speak to it gently.

Warm and nourish

A warm, caffeine-free drink. Magnesium, if it is part of your routine. A few slow stretches. These small acts of care are not indulgence; they are how a body is tucked in.

End the day with the Word

Let the last voice of the day be His. One psalm, read slowly. One line of gratitude written in your journal. One prayer that hands tomorrow back to God — because it was never yours to carry through the night.

"In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." — Psalm 4:8
